When Valiant introduced Gilad Anni-Padda, in 1992, the Eternal Warrior quickly became one of my two favorite titles they published. The other, oddly enough, was Archer & Armstrong, which co-stared another immortal, his brother Aram. The combination of the history and the toll immortality takes on a character has always been fascinating to me.

Robert Venditti returns to write this Valiant one-shot, Eternal Warrior: Awakening #1. Venditti was the writer of the prior series, Wrath of the Eternal Warrior, and he clearly is comfortable with the character. He deftly portrays the weight and sacrifice that comes with immortality.

Eternal Warrior: Awakening #1 is not a time jumping story where we observe Gilad at various points in time. This is a single tale of an early adventure in the Babylonian/Sumerian time period. Suffering from amnesia, Gilad Anni-Padda, with the help of that era’s Geomancer, must find himself to stop a merciless warlord who previously had beaten him in combat. I don’t want to divulge more of the story since you should go read it for yourself.

I have always enjoyed the “house style” of the Valiant line. When Valiant was first started, the art chores for the company were handled by such luminaries as Bob Layton, Don Perlin and Barry Windsor-Smith. Renato Guedes’s (Superman, Omac and Action Comics) art is crisp and precise. He continues Valiant’s tradition of clean, no-nonsense artwork.

Why you should buy this book?  If you are a previous fan of the Eternal Warrior, this one-shot hits all the right notes. If you have not previously been a reader of the series but liked Highlander (the first movie and the TV series – We are going to ignore the other films) or have read Casca the Eternal Mercenary books by Barry Sadler, you should definitely give Eternal Warrior: Awakening #1 a chance.
