The artwork of Rai: The History of the Valiant Universe #1 by artist Francis Portela was awesome. Nice, tight and consistent work. Beautifully drawn and laid out perfectly. Great detail and likenesses. Making characters look the same in every panel is an acquired skill and one that should be noted here. The colors by Andrew Dalhouse were bold and brilliant. The panels really jump out at you as you read it. The whole art presentation was amazing, top shelf work. But no presentation is complete without proper lettering. And this book was done by the amazing Dave Sharpe. Decent size and font throughout most of the book and as always a great flow. Real clear paths and direction.

Three hooded figures walk by a city, Gilad Anni-Padda, now an aged man, Karana the Geomancer and Rai. The Eternal Warrior guides them passed a staring female Shadowman and into a hidden room. Inside the room Gilad finds the Book of the Geomancers and the three travelers sit down. Rai must save the people of earth. But to do so without making the same mistakes as those who came before him he must learn the history of the Valiant universe. An education in history is in order and there are no better teachers than Gilad Anni-Padda and the Geomancer Karana. They open the Book of the Geomancers and the lessons begin. It was a fun read. Especially if you like history, even fictional history. Well written by Rafer Roberts, full of good dialogue and great summaries, I’d say this is the start of something amazing.
